Follow Your Heart Tag - Scrapmatts DT

My first Scrapmatts DT project for this month is a mixed media tag in my trademark purple/blue/pink colour scheme. These were the first three colours of mist I purchased and they are definitely my go-to colour choices. I love how sturdy the Scrapmatts chipboard tag bases are, you can really abuse them with multiple different mediums and techniques.

I've included a close up shot of this project too, to show the tulle backing to the heart, the crackle finish to the edging of the heart and the painted details on the metal charms.

Steampunk Tags - Scrapmatts DT

I had wanted to do a steampunk-style piece for quite a while now and decided the canvas I shared two days earlier would be the perfect chance to give it a go. Of course, being a new style I thought it best to practice on a smaller scale before starting work on the canvas so I tried out two different styles on some tags. Tags are so versatile for this purpose and now I can keep them to refer to later or add to layouts/cards in the future.

 A lot of the chipboard is the same as used on the canvas. Left tag: CB3007 Tags 03, CB5132 Chains 01, CB1239 Scrap Words 25, CB1078 Gears 05. Right tag: CB3007 Tags 03, CB1078 Gears 05, CB1017 Keys 01, CB6113 Scrap Words 32, CB602 Ornate Frame 02, CB5111 Layered Fob Watch 02.

Journal Journey 2015 - January Driver's Ed Version 2

I gave the Kreative Koncepts January art journal page tutorial another go today. I didn't follow it exactly to the letter but rather as a basis to build my own style upon. I went with red and yellow as my two additional colours, which also let me sneak in some orange by pretending they had blended in together.

I used Distress Inks as my base rather than sprays. This provided a lighter coloured background to then build my layers up on so the stamping texture shows up more. I tried some yellow sprays through a stencil in the bottom left corner but the colour was a bit light and the water in it activated the Distress Ink so I got an interesting effect. I tried harder to keep by crayon resist circles showing and complemented these with paint circles in white and yellow. The embossing resist is used on the tag, as well as my first attempt at a gelly roll pen as a border around the edge of the red part of the tag. I had to add some flowers and bling to pretty up the page too. :)

Discover Travel Tag - Couture Creations DT

Welcome back for a quick and easy travel-themed tag today. I received the Couture Creations Paris embossing folder in my design team kit and was stumped as to how to use this, given I'm not one of those people who has a real passion for Parris or the Eiffel Tower. I do however love to travel, so have kept the 'Travel * Escape' part of the design and covered up the part I didn't like. :)

Start by running your cardstock through the Paris embossing folder. I have used Core'dinations cardstock and then used the sanding block to reveal the kraft core which really highlights the image.

Adhere the cardstock to your chipboard tag and trim to fit. My tag is from Scrapmatts of course, they have a variety of sizes and styles. I find the thickness is perfect to provide good support yet you can still emboss them, sew through them or layer them up without getting them too bulky. I like to sand the edges of the tag too, as my cutting isn't always the smoothest.

Create the rest of the background for the tag. I have just stuck down some patterned paper after inking all the edges and then layered two different washi tapes at the bottom. Ink the edges of the whole tag to give a cohesive look. I also cut two of the Discover word from The Van Roe collection.

Gather a random assortment of embellishments and adhere these to your tag. I have used both halves of a travel-themed tag, flair button, skeleton leaves, twine and some Gemstones. Lastly, adhere the two titles slightly off-centre to create a shadow effect. Now you have a travel tag, ready to display on it's own or add to you next travel themed layout or journal.

Sewing Tags - Scrapmatts DT

For my second Scrapmatts DT project this month I finally remembered that I was meant to be creating a tag a month so have created a pair of sewing themed tags. Do you notice the fancy distressing on the dress form chipboard piece? This was created by dropping the chipboard hot embossing powder side down on my leg and then ripping it off, leaving a hash shaped burn mark on my leg. I highly recommend finding an alternative strategy to distress your own chipboard. :)

Scrapmatts chipboard used: CB1194 Sewing 02; CB3007 Tags 03; CB1065 Words 18 Elegance; CB6053 Dress Forms 04.

Don't forget about my 5th blogoversary giveaway. Entering is really simple, you just need to leave me a comment on the giveaway post by clicking the image below.

Scrapmatts New Release Frames

It's my day to post over at Scrapmatts and I have actually created three projects, but I'll be spacing them out on my blog since the poor thing is so bare otherwise. If you're impatient you can check them all out at once over at the new Scrapmatts Blog or at the Ning Gallery.

Sofie and Andrew sent out a wonderful package of new release chipboard designs earlier this year to their design team. Each member gets a slightly different package though, so you never know what all the new releases look like until you see the other DT's work or get in to a show yourself. I have already added the Hanging Hearts to my wish list after seeing how the other members have used it.

I received a lot of different frames in my pack, which was both good and bad. Good because I love Scrapmatts frames and the new releases are even more detailed and delicate than normal but also bad because I am really hopeless at actually using them in my work. This ornate frame design (you get both pieces in the one packet) just spoke to me though so I based these two projects around it. Bit more girly than normal for me, with lots of pink and flowers and lace but I really like the end results.

Scrapmatts goodies used: CB6090 Ornate Frames 18 (NEW); CH004 Filigree Flower #2; CH010 Filigree Flower #5; CB1121 Words 26 Best Wishes; CB3011 Tags 07; CB1204 Ribbon Banners 01; CB1198 Scrapwords 06.

Celebrate Beautiful Life Tag - UnstampaBelles DT

The challenge for November over at UnstampaBelles is to use vellum in your project. I have created a happy little tag using Scrapmatts chipboard and some die-cut vellum flowers. All of the colouring is done using Gelatos. I'm still learning how to use these but they are a lot of fun.

Here you can see a close up of one of my flowers. I rubbed the edges with the Gelato, then spritzed with water and then lightly scrunched when dry.

Inspire Journal Cover and Christmas Tags - Scrapmatts DT work

Scrapbooking Creations is an Australian scrapbooking magazine I subscribe to. This month they have started a new feature where all their Design Diva's showcase new techniques in an art journal. The whole project looked like so much fun I decided it was finally time to start my own art journal. I have copied Angella Peardon's technique for my cover using texture paste, mists and salt to create that very funky background.

I had the watch hands left over from the large fob watch piece so I painted them with Perfect Pearls and used them as a feature piece. I have also painted some leaf sprays and the Inspire word the same way.

And here is just a side view to show off the funky washi tape I put down the spine. This is also my mid-month example for UnstampaBelles challenge this month, which was to use us your scraps/stash. The journal book has been sitting in my draw for years without being used and was originally silver before I gesso'd it. The texture paste and mists are also something I have had for years.

Our second brief for this month was to create a couple of Christmas themed tags. I had never created a tag prior to joining the Scrapmatts team so I still struggle a bit with them however I like the challenge.  My first tag has a very traditional theme to it, using papers from the Kaisercraft Just Believe range.

I went in a bit of a different direction with my second tag. This one has some gesso applied over the chipboard before adding some mists and water. The textured/speckled effect was hard to capture in a photo.
